We've Heard of Flipping Houses...
We all know that the first rule of Fight Club is that you don't talk about Fight Club. But what about the Construction Club? Well, we think we should make a new rule: Learn to read blueprints. After all, we've heard of flipping houses, but we don't think this is what people mean when they talk about flipping houses. Or at least we hope not! How did this go so epically wrong?
We're not sure how this situation came about, but let's just hope that a strong tornado comes along soon to flip this house back where it should be. For the sake of the construction workers' jobs.
Space Saving Gone Wrong
With a growing population and a bigger demand for places to live, it seems as though more and more developers are opting for "tiny living." These space-saving initiatives allow the average Joe to have a smaller footprint without compromising on quality. And while most of these tiny living solutions work extremely well, others just make your brain hurt. Looking at this picture below, we feel like our brains might explode out of our heads.
We don't know what this construction worker was thinking when they built this kitchen counter/stairs hybrid design, but what we do know is that nobody wants to walk all over their food. Gross!
A Public Bathroom at Home
Anyone who has ever used a public bathroom in the United States will know of "the gap." For some reason, these bathrooms are kitted out with doors that have gaps on either side of them, creating a very awkward restroom experience. The last thing anyone wants is to make eye contact while they're doing their business, but it seems as though the construction worker behind this home bathroom door decided that they did.
We guess this construction worker wanted to create that public bathroom feel at home, but at least the guy behind the door doesn't look too upset with the situation. We can see him quite well, after all.
What Could Go Wrong?
It must be hard to be a construction worker. We don't doubt that. From the long hours to the painful joints at the end of a hard day, we don't blame these guys for taking a well-earned break. After all, everyone needs a little five minutes to take a breather and shove a few donuts into their mouths! But we do have to question the choices of these construction workers.
Sure, we bet they were enjoying the shade. But was it the best idea to sit underneath heavy machinery that was propped up by its own hydraulics? Hmmm, we think not.
It's Called Art, Look It up
Let's be honest, bricklaying looks fun. For all of five minutes, anyway. Laying each brick by boring brick seems pretty tedious, and while professional bricklayers take pride in their sleek and sophisticated walls and buildings, it seems as though these guys didn't catch the bricklaying bug. In fact, you can see exactly where they started to get bored. After that point, they seemed to just throw the bricks down and cement them wherever they landed.
Of course, these guys could have been creating a surrealist piece of artwork, but it seems more likely that this was just a serious construction fail. Let's hope someone didn't pay the full price for that.
The More You Look...
If you live in a rental property, you'll know how irritating it is to have to rely on a landlord to get anything done. When the shower stops working, you have to call them. When the windows start to leak, you have to call them. And when the kitchen needs a little re-fit, you have to call them. That doesn't mean they're going to get the job done well, though.
The more you look at this picture, the more infuriating it gets. From the tiny oven that doesn't line up to the extractor fan to the wonky tiles and outlets on the walls, it's painful to look at.
Caution: Wet Floor
Have you ever looked at something and thought, "this is the most stupid, yet brilliant thing I have ever seen?" If you haven't, then please look no further. While we all know that floating machinery above a swimming pool is just a disaster waiting to happen, we can't help but be a little impressed. The people behind this had an idea, and they went for it. How else were they going to get up there, anyway?
We have to applaud their creativity, but the little devil on our shoulder also wishes that someone went over to the floating pontoon and gave it a little push before watching it slowly float away.
Dividing the Assets
We can only assume that the person living in this house is going through a divorce and is in the process of dividing their assets with their ex-spouse. Perhaps they have half a couch inside, and half of a mattress in the bedroom. They get half of everything, right? They certainly seem to only have half a staircase, anyway. Either that or they built some steps specifically for their pet cat.
But what makes this whole construction fail even more ridiculous is the fact that the stairs aren't even on the correct side. The door opens from the right, but the steps are on the left. Yikes.
When Gravity Gets Involved
Many people around the world assume that they can take on DIY projects themselves. Sometimes they want to save money, and sometimes they just want a little project to keep them busy. And we have to admire their spirit! But without expert help, it's impossible to get something 100% right. Before too long, the owner of this house realized this for themselves when they forgot that a little thing called gravity existed.
The more you look at this picture, though, the more confusing it gets. Sure, they got the window treatment seriously wrong, but just look at the handles on the kitchen cupboards! Why are they so high?
No Sleepwalkers Allowed
You sometimes have to wonder what goes through some people's heads when they make decisions like this one. Or was this house designed by artificial intelligence that doesn't really understand how humans work? Either way, there's no doubt about the fact that this construction fail is definitely hard to live with. And this room is definitely not suitable for anyone who is drunk or who has a history of sleepwalking.
Imagine getting up in the middle of the night, unable to see and bleary-eyed from sleep, only to fall down the gap and tumble down the steps! That would definitely wake you up.
Time to Climb for Your Life
Hands up if you have heart palpitations just by looking at this photo? We really don't blame you. The stairs on the side of this building look like something out of a recurring nightmare, and we honestly don't understand how anything like this could ever be built. Sure, we know that exterior staircases are important in case of a fire, but where's the handrail? And what about the rest of the building?
It would take us a whole hour to climb these stairs; if we could even make it to the top at all. We'd be hyperventilating, crying, and probably throwing up at the same time.
Improvise, Adapt, Overcome
Anyone who has ever worked with metal will probably be cringing at the screen right now. That's because the picture below is so much more than a construction fail. It's also an accident waiting to happen! Sure, we admire the fact that this guy improvized and thought on his feet when he realized that he didn't have any goggles or a mask. But we all know that plastic and fire don't mix, right?
This guy is really in a race against time. The big question is; will he finish cutting the metal before he either suffocates or sets himself on fire? We guess we'll find out.
The Kitchen of Nightmares
For many people, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It's where they spend most of their time, it's where they cook their meals, and it's where they hang out with their family. So, it's important that every kitchen works for the people living in the house. But we can't help but think that this particular kitchen doesn't work for anyone who has hips. We feel bruised just thinking about this.
From the weird angles to the cupboard handles sticking out all over the place, we just know that we'd be bumping our bones more than we'd be washing the dishes. It really is a kitchen nightmare.
Time to Break Your Arm
Everyone knows that bathroom cabinets are essential in any house. They're perfect for hiding away all of your junk, and they're a great way to keep the room looking clean and tidy. And they're pretty easy to install, right? Well, not quite. Whoever installed these bathroom cabinets is probably hanging their head in shame right now. After all, the number one rule in construction is you should "measure twice, cut once."
Due to this serious construction fail, the person who lives here will have to quite literally break their arm if they want to even think about putting anything at the back of this cabinet. Ouch.
When You Just Want Some Curves
We're no strangers to seeing Photoshop fails online. From celebrities to your friends from college, everyone seems to want to accentuate their curves on social media. But it seems as though they're not the only ones who want to add some extra junk to their trunk. Whoever designed this "straight" road and the adjoining curb also decided that they weren't going to stick to conventional road norms. They wanted to mix things up a bit.
The end result is an absolute shambles that would be super difficult to drive on. And the big question is; do you drive straight? Or do you follow the strange curves?
Caulking While Blindfolded
Have you ever enlisted the help of a construction worker and soon realized that you could have just saved your money and done a better job yourself? Yep, we thought so. The person who lives in this house probably thought the same when they saw this mess, too. The contractor must have been blindfolded when they caulked around the edge of this sink, surely? It seems like the only logical explanation.
While caulking doesn't seem like the hardest job in the world, this picture proves that things can go very, very wrong if you don't pay attention. It looks like a toothpaste explosion.
A Very Expensive Mistake
In a world where skyscrapers reign supreme, there's no doubt about the fact that construction workers are getting more talented. These guys have to build structures thousands of feet above the ground, and that can't be easy! But construction talent doesn't always walk hand in hand with common sense, and the person who signed off on the idea to transport a big glass panel by helicopter definitely had no common sense.
This looks more like a scene out of an action movie than a legitimate construction project. We're half expecting Vin Diesel to jump off that building and onto the glass pane while being pursued by the FBI.
Door Molding Strikes Again
There's nothing more annoying than having something in your house that you can't use because it's broken or faulty in some way. And this is even more annoying when that something is a cupboard under the sink. That's the ultimate junk cupboard, right? Well, it is for everyone else. Not so much for the person who lives in this house. Their under-sink cupboard is out of bounds for the most part.
Of course, it's not completely out of use. But the botched cupboard is proof that door moldings will forever be a construction worker's worst enemy. They just always get in the way!
Got Flipped, Turned Upside Down
While there's no doubt about the fact that this construction fail is pretty hilarious, we can also understand the confusion. All of the numbers on this house sign could be flipped and still look like numbers, after all! And while the person who installed this was just unlucky, we also feel as though they could have put a little extra effort into making sure they were installing it the right way around.
When you really look at it, the number 8 does look a little strange. Let's just hope that the mailman doesn't believe everything they read, otherwise they're going to get pretty confused.
Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?
Construction workers often have to follow a code of practice. They follow certain building regulations and rules, and they all have to abide by these codes to ensure that buildings are safe for human use. But it seems as though the people behind this epic construction failure decided to throw the rulebook out of their badly constructed window for this job. Have you ever seen anything so awful? Because we haven't.
From the super thin breeze blocks to the un-staggered seams, we can't help but think that kids who have only ever built something with LEGO could have built it better.
A Dangerous Game of Jenga
You probably don't need us to tell you that construction work can be pretty dangerous. There's heavy machinery to manage, there are awkward heights to deal with, and then there are the workers who just have no common sense. In fact, you could say that these guys are the most dangerous aspect of construction! Especially when one of them decides to take a whole (extremely heavy) pallet of bricks onto the flimsy scaffolding.
This whole picture is just a disaster waiting to happen, and we can't help but wonder what was going through his head. Was he trying to work smarter and not harder? It definitely didn't work.
You've Gotta Love Plumbers
The most irritating part of any construction project is having to deal with numerous "professionals" at the same time. From the carpenters to the electricians and the plumbers, coordinating with all of these people can be difficult - especially if one of them wants to cut corners. You know, like cutting through a supporting beam to make fitting their pipes easier so they can go home early. Yes, we're looking at you, plumbers!
Of course, the big debate here is whether it's the plumber who is 100% in the wrong or whether the carpenter had a part to play. But we'll let you debate that one yourself.
Level 3 Parkour Unlocked
While most people have the pleasure of working above ground, there are many people in this world who have to descend into the depths of the sewers and make their way down vaults just like this one. And for that reason, a certain amount of attention to detail has to go into designing and installing the rings that form a ladder for these workers. So, do you notice anything wrong here?
The picture above looks more like a parkour level on a video game than something a regular worker would have to deal with. Let's hope they were top of the class during their parkour lessons!
The Deck From Hell
Most of us have watched a DIY show and thought "Yep, I can totally do that myself!" These heavily edited shows lead us into a false sense of security, and it doesn't take us long to realize that construction is a lot harder and a lot more precise than we realize. And whoever tried to build this awful deck in their home obviously got that memo so late they eventually had to call in a professional to save them.
From the wonky wood to the disjointed joints, we have a feeling that the expert probably considered ripping the whole thing out and starting again from scratch. And we wouldn't blame them.
One Small Step to the ER
We're no experts when it comes to construction and building work, but one thing we do know is that staircases are pretty important. They need to be stable, they need to be strong, and they need to be durable. So, basically the complete opposite of the staircase in the photo below! We don't think we've ever seen concrete quite so thin. What's the weight limit? One banana? One foot without a body attached to it?
We hope that nobody ever sets foot on this staircase; unless they want a very expensive trip to the ER. This might actually be a staircase to heaven after all.
The Coolest Neighborhood Around
If you live in a hot country, air conditioning is probably everywhere. In fact, you probably couldn't imagine your sweat-free life without it! And while A/C units are so common you'd expect most companies to be able to fit them with their eyes closed, it seems as though some newbies on the block weren't listening during air conditioning school. Of course, the basics of this installation aren't totally wrong. Just half wrong.
Yep, the person who installed this did so completely the wrong way around. Instead of cooling down the house, this unit will instead cool the neighborhood outside. Maybe they're trying to fight off global warming?
When Old Meets New
It's fair to say that construction trends have changed over the years. Some architects prefer more traditional styles of building and decoration, some opt towards the modern, while others try to mix the new with the old. Sure, this sometimes works and looks pretty cool. But it can also result in a crime of extortionate proportions! And this picture below deserves to be locked up for all eternity and never seen again.
This construction fail is so bad that even the angel statues can't bear to look at it, and we don't blame them. Whoever did this should never set foot in this building again.
Just Click It Back in Place?
Most of us have no clue when it comes to construction projects. After all, our experience of building LEGO skyscrapers and farmyard scenes didn't exactly prepare us for the real world! And while we're not going to be winning any architectural awards anytime soon, even we know that bridges are supposed to stay put. They're definitely not supposed to move 6 feet during a truck crash, right? No, we thought not.
Well, that's exactly what happened when the dump bed of this truck lifted up and shifted the whole bridge out of place. So, how do you click it back into place?
Just Keep Driving
Designing roadways must be a pretty stressful job. Especially in a world where cars, pedestrians, and cyclists all share the same roads. And while experts in this field know exactly what they're doing, we can't help but think that new employees should have a little more training before they're let loose. Otherwise, you might find that cars will be driving right into oncoming traffic and cyclists. Yep, just look at that middle lane!
This is quite literally an accident waiting to happen, and what's worse is the fact that this looks like a second attempt at the job. If you look closely, you'll see a fainter line just a little to the right.
Keep the Seat Up, Please
If you live in a house where someone is constantly reminding you to put the toilet seat down after you've used it, you might love this construction fail. This terrible job means that it's literally impossible to put the toilet seat down after you've done your business, which means it's one less thing to think about! But as this looks like a public restroom, the reality of this construction fail seems totally gross.
While we understand the importance of grab bars in restrooms, the one behind the toilet itself seems to be in a strange place. Unless someone plans to straddle the toilet backward.
"You Said Paint Everything, Right? "
Painting is one of those jobs that requires attention to detail in some areas, but not all the time. In fact, anyone who has ever painted a room before will know that it's easy to drift off into dreamland and daydream while painting a large wall. But in doing that, you run the risk of missing something. You know, like a security pad you probably weren't meant to paint over!
While this person certainly did their job and painted everything they were supposed to, they also messed up big time when they did this. And we all know how hard paint is to get off when it's dry.
When You Just Need Some Space
It can be annoying when the paint on your walls starts to crumble away and mold begins to grow on your windows. But you might want to come back and look at this photo when that happens because you'll soon realize that nothing can be quite as bad as this! We're not sure how or why, but this person's house literally said "I just really need some space from you right now" to them.
Yes, these two walls are moving further and further apart, probably leaving the homeowners scratching their heads and wondering how much money it's going to cost them to fix this construction fail.
Strong and Warm?
If you're tight on cash and know that something on your property needs replacing or updating, there's no harm in trying to fix it yourself. Why not give it a go, hey? You might just surprise yourself. But it's best that you do your research before you get started and do something stupid. And these guys obviously didn't do that. Instead of buying the proper product to reinforce their stone walls, they used spray foam instead!
The only positive we can reach for in this situation is that their stone wall will now be a little more insulated in the winter months. What good that will do is beyond us, though.
Does It Fold in or Out?
Although we know that this is a serious construction fail, we also can't help but be impressed with this weird and wonderful photo. The construction worker behind this weird and wonderful creation not only made do with what they had, but they also managed to create a pretty tight angle on the switch. But does anyone else see an illusion? The more we look at it, the more we don't know whether it folds in or out.
Whatever the answer, this is one of those construction fails that is so bad it's almost good. Sure, we wouldn't want it in our house, but it's definitely a talking point.
Who Upset the Three Little Pigs?
We know that weather systems around the world are changing. The rain is getting heavier, the sun is getting stronger, and the wind is windier. And while our changing world is a cause for concern, most of us rest easy knowing that buildings are normally constructed to withstand such weather. Unfortunately, it seems as though the same can't be said for these houses. The big bad wolf obviously had a field day here.
It's pretty unnerving to see such a construction fail in the wild, but maybe this was a blessing in disguise. It's nice to live by the water, but is that a little too close?
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Nowadays, it's not hard to stumble upon a video on social media of someone fixing a cracked sink with ramen noodles or polishing hardwood floors with a walnut. People will find weird and wonderful ways to do anything, which is why we're not too shocked by this construction fail. Sure, the construction worker behind this quick fix probably should have found some stone to fix the walkway, but we weirdly like this different idea!
After all, the bags are filled with concrete anyway. All the worker needs to do is wait for the paper to degrade and it'll look good as new. Work smarter, not harder, people.
Who Wants to Stand Side-By-Side, Anyway?
Restrooms are pretty awkward places. From the gaps in the bathroom stalls to the urinals and the hand washing stations, there's too much human contact for a lot of people. They simply want to do their business without eye contact and without having to stand side-by-side - and we can only assume that the construction workers behind this fail were of the same opinion. So, they built a bathroom for introverts.
While we're not sure this sink is supposed to be on its side, this bar now has to make do with the fact that those sinks are there to stay.
Hope You're Not Too Hot
If you're the kind of person who loves to have the ceiling fan on full speed while you're working, then you probably don't want to apply for the company that works in this building. While there's no denying the fact that they do, in fact, have a ceiling fan, that doesn't mean that they can use it! Whoever installed this thing forgot to take a good look at their work surface.
While we're not quite sure how they managed to miss a giant column going up into the ceiling, this fan is now rendered useless. Unless you want to hear it go "bonk" four times a rotation.
You Pay Cheap, You Pay Twice
There's no doubt about the fact that construction work isn't cheap. And while nobody wants to shell out thousands for work that they couldn't care less about, the best way to avoid a major construction fail is to pair a fair price. After all, when you pay cheap, you normally pay twice! The person who signed off on this project obviously didn't get that memo, though. Instead, they went for the lowest bidder.
The end result is construction that is far from sufficient. In fact, you could go as far as to say that this is completely unsafe. The construction workers tried but failed miserably.
Oh, Dam(n)
Although most of us like to think that intelligent little beavers are the ones behind the many dams we have in this world, it seems as though humans have their part to play as well. And while many would assume that human construction trumps the construction of an animal, it seems as though this isn't always the case. We bet this wouldn't have happened if a beaver had built it.
This was either a major construction failure or a nifty new rollercoaster ride for the fish and other animals in the water. We bet they had fun wooshing down the slide, anyway.
