Everyone dreams of a home with large rooms, and endless amounts of money with which to decorate them. But, that's simply not the reality for most of us - and that's okay! Small rooms have a ton of potential, and it's a lot easier to maximize the space in a small room than in a large room. Here are some tips to get you started on creating the small room of your dreams.
Organize The Space
Before you even start to think about decorating a small room, you need to declutter it. As Marie Kondo says, "Does it spark joy?" If anything in the room doesn't immediately make you feel happy, or serve a specific purpose, then consider donating it to your local thrift store. As soon as all of the knick-knacks, large pieces of furniture, and any other odds and ends have been cleared out, the space is ready to be decorated!
Select The Perfect Color Palette
Have you ever walked into a room that has walls painted a dark blue or red? Dark colors create a feeling of closeness, which means a small room painted in a dark color will feel even smaller. That is not a feeling you want to have in a small space. When it's time to choose the color palette for the room, think about the furniture you plan to use, and all of the accents you will include. This will inform the choice of color. Lighter colors, and hues of the same color, are the best way to go. Mint greens, pale blues, and pastel purples all open up a small room and create a feeling of airiness.
Let The Sun Shine In
Hopefully, your small room has a nice big window to allow the sun to come streaming in. As soon as natural light enters a room, it comes to life. That's why thick curtains in dark shades, or heavy blinds, should be avoided in smaller rooms. They keep the light out, and dark drapes only make a room look smaller. Add some gauzy curtains in a pale color, for some flow and you may also want to install a light fixture that brightens up the room even more. Track lighting is a good option, just make sure it is not fluorescent which can be a bit harsh.
Add A Mirror
Have you ever noticed a living room or bedroom that has a large mirror in it? These mirrors aren't purely for decoration. A large framed mirror leaned up against a wall, or hung over a piece of furniture can give a room the appearance of being larger. It does this by reflecting other parts of the room, and it tricks the brain into thinking a space is bigger than it appears. If you want to go one step further, then consider purchasing some tables with mirror tops.
Glass And Lucite Furniture
Lucite was popular in the early 2000s and has made its way back into the world of fashion with the likes of the Kardashians wearing lucite heels. This trend has also made its way into the world of interior decorating. Glass and lucite furniture have become very popular in recent years with its transparent character making it perfect for smaller rooms. Chairs made of lucite and tables made of glass allow people to look right through them, almost as if they are not there. That creates added space in a room, because they don't dominate the area. Heavier materials like dark woods and metal tend to take up more space, and create that more closed-in feeling associated with darker colors.
